I haven’t posted in a while, so I thought I would put up a letter I recently wrote to Senator Biden.

Hello Senator,

My name is Jacob Jones-Goldstein. I am currently a US citizen and resident of Delaware. I am a registered member of the Democratic party.
I am writing you because you represent me in the Senate and I have some serious concerns about voter disenfranchisement in America. The questions and controversies that swirled around the last two presidential elections have not seemed to galvanize many to action in terms of creating a better system. With important elections coming up soon I am disappointed and a bit surprised that this does not seem to be more of an issue. I am writing to express my concerns and also to find out where you stand on the issue.
We are facing a difficult time as a country and as a people. I fear that the executive branch of the government is moving in a frightening direction. More and more civil liberties are being challenged and laws are being sidestepped. It has come to a point where no one really questions the dishonestly of the President, but simply the extent of it. In the face of such grievous offenses towards the American people I have come to doubt our primary means of setting things write, voting. We ostensibly live in a Democracy, but our most fundamental right is being taken away from us. Thomas Paine once said “The right of voting for representatives is the primary right by which other rights are protected. To take away this right is to reduce a man to slavery, for slavery consists in being subject to the will of another, and he that has not a vote in the election of representatives is in this case.” I fear that we have arrived at a situation where our votes are not being counted and we are being stripped of our power as citizens. Rolling Stone magazine recently published an extensive article about the tactics and laws broken in Ohio during the most recent presidential elections. I have read and heard most of what was talked about in the article, but it is as good a place as any to start.

I am writing you as my representative because I am angry. I believe I am justified in being angry because I believe in America, and I believe in the American people. I believe in our system. I believe in Democracy . How can Democracy survive if the basic right to vote is being taken away? If we lose our right to enact change via elections we are left with Fascism.
